On August 23, we observe the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, a commemoration established by UNESCO aimed at honoring those affected by the transatlantic slave trade. This year, UNESCO emphasized that the courage of victims and freedom fighters can inspire forthcoming generations to create equitable societies. Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO’s Director-General, stated, “We must eradicate human exploitation and affirm the inherent dignity of every individual.”Reflecting on the day, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed noted that while we acknowledge the tragic history of the transatlantic slave trade and its victims, modern slavery persists, signaling that “the fight is not over.”“Let’s confront the injustices of both past and present,” she urged, advocating for the dignity and rights of all. The UN has been actively contributing to this cause since 2007 through its Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery. The International Day serves as a global reminder to honor past struggles for freedom.
