Tina Price-Genes, President of the Aliquippa School Board, received support from a parent of a football coach hours after a devastating bus accident involving numerous junior high players on August 23 in Aliquippa. As of August 26, two individuals remained hospitalized following the incident. Mayor Dwan Walker highlighted the close-knit community of Aliquippa, emphasizing that when one suffers, it impacts all.
On the morning of the crash, 25 junior high football team members, accompanied by two coaches, were en route to a scrimmage in Pine Richland when their bus collided on Shaffer Road. Witnesses reported players leaping over live power lines to escape. A total of 21 individuals aboard suffered injuries; one 14-year-old, Az’riannah Gilbert, was critically hurt and remained in UPMC Children's Hospital.
Public meetings followed, where officials expressed gratitude for first responders. Superintendent Dr. Phillip Woods stated the bus was lodged against a hillside post-crash. Mental health resources are available to the affected students. Coach Jay Sparrow voiced concerns regarding their emotional well-being.
