Willie Charles Brown, Sr., the esteemed publisher of Inglewood Today, departed on June 25 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center at the age of 81.For over thirty years, Brown utilized his role as a journalist and publisher to empower the residents of Inglewood, capturing the transformation of one of South Los Angeles’s vibrant Black communities. His life was commemorated on July 19 at Inglewood Park Cemetery, surrounded by family, friends, and civic leaders.Born on February 17, 1944, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Brown thrived as a student-athlete before relocating to California, where he called Inglewood home. In 1993, following the Los Angeles uprising, he launched Inglewood Today to amplify local voices and challenge negative portrayals.“Inglewood Today was invaluable,” stated Mayor James T. Butts. As a mentor and collaborator, Brown supported emerging leaders and prioritized community issues. His unwavering dedication left an indelible mark on journalism and civic society, reflected by those who cherished him.
