NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Today, the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, alongside Holland & Associates PC, submitted a petition in the Davidson County Chancery Court contesting the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s (TDSHS) refusal to provide appropriate driver’s licenses and state IDs for transgender residents. "Every individual deserves the right to live authentically and with respect," stated Lucas Cameron-Vaughn, ACLU-TN senior staff attorney. "Accurate identification is essential for employment, voting, and daily activities. Forcing individuals to possess misleading IDs is both unjust and illegal." The case, Doe et al. v. Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, initiated on April 23, 2024, involves plaintiff "Jane Doe," whose safety concerns mandate anonymity. The situation has left her vulnerable to discrimination and upheaval. A subsequent plaintiff, Chrissy Miller, faced threats to her license after a successful gender marker change.
