The parents of a Black high school student are pursuing legal action against the Williamsport Area School District in Pennsylvania following an alarming incident involving their son. The event, which transpired on May 28, involved Richard Caschera, a recently appointed instructor with no prior teaching experience, who allegedly strapped the student to a medical backboard for appearing to doze off.During a test, the junior, referenced in the lawsuit as "N.W.," requested restroom breaks, which were denied. After placing his head down, another student was instructed to use smelling salts on him, despite his documented allergies. Caschera responded by restraining N.W. to a backboard, subjecting him to discomfort. Witnesses reported that he had to simulate coughing to be released.The lawsuit accuses various parties of unlawful conduct, asserting that the actions reflected a clear abuse of authority and discrimination, as N.W. was the only Black student subjected to public humiliation.
