WASHINGTON D.C. – June 16, 2021 – Alright America, this is not a drill. Mere days before Juneteenth 2021, the US Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 475 (also known as The Juneteenth Bill). Juneteenth is an annual African American holiday first celebrated in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1866, to commemorate the official emancipation of enslaved African-American persons in Texas the previous year. This liberation occurred almost three years after The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Republican President Abraham Lincoln and more than two months after Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865, marking the end of the Civil War. The bipartisan bill includes big name sponsors like Senator John Cornyn [R-TX], Sen. Marco Rubio [R-FL], Sen. Elizabeth Warren [D-MA], and Sen. Cory Booker [D-NJ]; it was spearheaded by Texas Congresswoman Sheila Lee Jackson [D-TX-18] and is expected to pass just as easily in the Democratic-led House of Representatives. President Joe Biden’s signature will be the final action needed to make the bill a federal law. This would make Juneteenth one of twelve nationally recognized holidays on America’s annual calendar.A monument outside the Texas Capitol Building in Austin honoring African-American history regarding the Emancipation Proclamation and...
