Birmingham Boosts Kindergarten Readiness with Extra $250,000 Funding

The Birmingham City Council approved a $250,000 agreement with Small Magic on Tuesday to enhance early childhood education for children under five. Founded in 2019, Small Magic, previously known as Birmingham Talks, has become a national leader in early literacy technology. The program, which has helped over 400 children, utilizes a “Fitbit”-like device to track word exposure, aiding in kindergarten readiness. Councilor Crystal Smitherman emphasized its importance in preparing children for academic success, benefiting families across 70 neighborhoods.
