The Ethics of AI in Medicine: Where Code Meets Compassion

AI is transforming the landscape of healthcare through its remarkable ability to interpret intricate medical and research data, enhancing diagnostics, drug innovation, and our understanding of health systems. However, with this advancement arise crucial ethical dilemmas regarding equity, trust, and inclusion. These vital issues were thoroughly discussed at the "Code, Context, and Care" symposium organized by the Cobb Institute during the National Medical Association conference on July 20. This gathering of experts from medicine, informatics, public health, and education critically examined AI's role in ethically advancing healthcare delivery.Panelists, including Dr. Alison Whelan and Dr. Hassan Tetteh, warned that AI could worsen existing disparities if not thoughtfully designed. Dr. Gilles Gnacadja from Amgen stressed that to have a meaningful impact, AI must prioritize transparency, accountability, and equitable design.
