A Colorado court on Friday sentenced Michael Sang Correa, 46, a Gambian soldier and member of a notorious death squad, to 67 years in prison for his involvement in the extensive torture of Gambians following a failed coup in 2006. Correa, who moved to Denver in 2016, served as a soldier under the oppressive regime of former President Yahya Jammeh and was a key figure in the Junglers, a death squad notorious for its brutality. In 2019, he was arrested for overstaying his visa, prompting human rights organizations to demand accountability for his actions. On April 15, 2025, a Colorado jury convicted Correa of torture and conspiracy.
