Pittsburgh stands as a vibrant hub for African arts, culture, and community, impacting both the city and its residents positively. Erin Perry, Executive Director of The Legacy Arts Project located on Tioga Street in Homewood, plays a vital role in fueling this cultural richness. A highlight of her endeavors is “Dance Africa,” a community celebration that highlights the arts, dance, and drumming rooted in the African diaspora. Marking its 13th year in Pittsburgh this 2025, “Dance Africa” originated in 1977 in Brooklyn, established by Charles Rudolph Davis, known as Dr. Charles “Baba Chuck” Davis. Its resounding success birthed events in six cities, preserving the heritage and artistic contributions of the African community. This year’s festivities take place on July 26 and 27 at the New Hazlett Theater, featuring an outdoor marketplace and workshops led by distinguished guest artists like Youssouf Koumbassa. As Perry eloquently states, “Dance Africa Pittsburgh” serves as “medicine” for the community, fostering unity and healing.
