At New York Fashion Week, the daughters of renowned activists Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made a powerful statement by gracing the runway alongside other notable civil rights figures. This past weekend, Actively Black, an athleisure brand established by Lanny Smith, showcased crucial icons of the Civil Rights Movement.
Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz and Dr. Bernice King donned sweatshirts celebrating their fathers as they confidently walked side-by-side. Smith took a moment to honor their mothers, Coretta Scott King and Betty Shabazz, during the event. He expressed his emotional gratitude on Instagram, stating, “I’ve cried three times since last night. Thank you for trusting me with this vision.”
Also featured was Ruby Bridges, who, at age six, became the first African American to attend an all-white school. The show included poignant footage of her past experiences, symbolizing enduring strength. Celebrated photographer Cecil Williams and Juneteenth flag designer Ben Haith also participated, highlighting the event's significance.
