Pedestrians near the New Village entrance on Chaussee Road, Castries, were shocked Friday evening by the sound of gunfire.
Eyewitnesses told St. Lucia Times that around 5:30 p.m., a lone gunman opened fire on another man, injuring him. The assailant attempted to flee toward the Anglican Primary School but was intercepted by a police officer.
“A police officer driving in a vehicle jumped out and started shooting after the gunman,” one eyewitness recounted.
The fleeing suspect was eventually apprehended by police, while the gunshot victim was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Friday’s shooting is the second such incident in Castries this month, sparking renewed concern over escalating crime. Earlier this month, gunmen opened fire on two men near Derek Walcott Square in broad daylight, leaving one injured and the other dead.
Road users and residents have called for urgent action to address the rising violence, emphasizing the need for greater security and preventative measures.
Investigations into the latest incident are ongoing.
