Speaker Mike Johnson Struggles With Trump Mental Health Question, Goes Off Script

Tensions rose on Capitol Hill Tuesday when House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was confronted by Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.) over concerns about Donald Trump’s mental condition. The hallway exchange unfolded only hours after Trump delivered a lengthy speech to top military officials at Marine Corps Base Quantico. His address, aimed at more than 800 commanders, mixed partisan attacks on President Joe Biden with off-topic remarks about domestic violence, leaving much of the audience unresponsive. Several major outlets described the speech as uneven and noted that Trump appeared unsettled by the lack of applause. Dean seized on those impressions, bluntly telling Johnson, “The president is unhinged. He is unwell.” Johnson, visibly uneasy, tried to deflect by saying, “I don’t control him.” Dean warned that Trump’s performance posed a risk to national security, underscoring her belief that his leadership had grown erratic. The exchange did not end there. Dean also pressed Johnson to denounce a racist AI-generated video aimed at Democratic leaders. Johnson stopped short of a firm condemnation, saying only, “That’s not my style. I respect you.”
