Taking Charge: Why I Would Embrace This 'Shutdown' Moment

Just shy of two weeks into the current installment of Shutdown Theater—a performance where the US government does not technically “shut down,” yet certain “non-essential” operations do—both Republicans and Democrats continue their familiar cycle of finger-pointing. My stance has consistently been that each party should proactively own these shutdowns instead of lamenting them. Rather than the monotonous appeals of “the other side is not cooperating,” they ought to assert, “Yes, we’re making cuts—we’re in charge, and these functions will resume only when we secure what we demand from the Democrats/Republicans.”
I expect President Donald Trump to adopt this assertive approach, especially since it’s clear this shutdown is his party’s doing. With Republicans in control of the White House and Congress, they can dictate the shutdown’s duration. Moreover, Trump has taken significant steps during this shutdown. The administration questions if furloughed employees deserve retroactive pay, suggesting a shift towards a more equitable approach. Additionally, the initiation of Reduction In Force cuts shows a commitment to streamlining government operations. Embracing these actions rather than shifting blame could enhance his administration's image.
