As Macedonia Baptist Church commemorates its 75th anniversary, the influential legacies of its esteemed pastors are pivotal to its history. Since its establishment in North Sacramento, the church has been shepherded by two remarkable leaders. Rev. Cleo M. Cummings, the founding pastor since 1950, hailed from Texarkana, Texas, and was one of eleven siblings. He married Roberta Nelson Cummings during his military service and enjoyed raising four sons. After moving to Sacramento, he engaged actively with the Del Paso Union Baptist Church, ultimately responding to his calling in 1949. A year later, he co-founded Macedonia Baptist Church, where he served for 23 years. Widely regarded as “Sacramento’s singing pastor,” Rev. Cummings later led the New Testament Baptist Church, expanding its prominence. Rev. Dr. Edward L. Varnado succeeded him in 1973, dedicating over 45 years to Macedonia, guiding with compassion and faith. His contributions as a preacher and community advocate continue to inspire followers and future leaders alike, strengthening the church’s foundation for years to come.
