Ms. Esther in critical condition following senseless attack

A Winston-Salem legend is in the hospital after she was brutally attacked last Sunday.   According to the Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD), on Sunday around 7 a.m. officers responded to a call for an assault on a female at Atrium Health Wake Forest Medical. Once on the scene, officers spoke with security who had received a call earlier about an unknown individual in the parking deck.   When security arrived, they observed Donald Norwood, 65, and Esther Deaver, 85, who is known throughout the community as ‘Ms. Esther,’ ‘Bicycle Lady,’ or ‘Whoopi,’ depending on who you ask. Ms. Esther has traveled throughout the city for many years, pushing her pink girl’s bicycle, and is a beloved local treasure.   The investigation conducted by the WSPD determined that Norwood violently beat Ms. Esther before dragging her into the stairwell of the parking deck. She is currently in critical condition and recovering in a local hospital.   After word got out that she was hospitalized, hundreds of people took to social media to show their support for Ms. Esther.                Police have not yet determined the connection between Ms. Esther and her attacker, but the investigation suggests they were not in a romantic relationship.  Norwood has been...
