NC Mutual Revitalizes Legacy: A New Chapter for Black Wall Street

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — Since its inception in 1898, North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company has served as a cornerstone of “Black Wall Street” in Durham. Vertella Solomon, a dedicated employee for over forty years, reminisced about the founding vision addressing African Americans' insurance needs. In 2022, the company liquidated but has since begun a new chapter under EquiTrust Life Insurance Company, preserving its legacy. Meanwhile, Tiffany Griffin, a 2019 entrepreneur, celebrates Black history in Durham through her scented product line, “Diaspora.” She recognizes the vital role of business insurance amidst challenges facing Black businesses.
