Quamekia Shavers is excited to share her acceptance into the renowned Campaign School at Yale, occurring from June 9 to 13 in New Haven, Connecticut. This prestigious five-day summer program selects only 80 participants nationwide for an intensive, non-partisan educational experience aimed at empowering emerging leaders.
Throughout the course, Shavers will acquire vital skills and knowledge critical for navigating the intricacies of contemporary political campaigns, guided by experienced professionals from both of the major political factions. The curriculum will specifically address the unique obstacles women face when pursuing elected positions, focusing on fundraising techniques, campaign safety, and the financial elements of running for office.
Despite notable progress, women's underrepresentation persists in political environments. For instance, African American women constitute just 5.4% of North Carolina’s state legislators and 16.2% of female legislators. The Campaign School is dedicated to equipping women—and supportive men—with the tools needed to attain positions of power.
“Shavers exemplifies a new wave of women leaders who prioritize collaboration over ego,” stated Patricia Russo, executive director of The Campaign School at Yale. As an African American woman from Winston-Salem's east side, Shavers cherishes this opportunity at Yale, aiming to address the challenges and inequities faced by her constituents.
