The Roberts Family Development Center organized a National Day of Social Action event on July 23 at River City High School in West Sacramento, aimed at highlighting students of color. This initiative, part of the Children’s Defense Fund and inspired by civil rights figure Ella Baker, emphasizes the theme “Public Education Is a Public Good.” Over six weeks, students created posters and engaged in performances such as poetry, songs, and dances to underscore the significance of public education. CEO Derrell Roberts noted this summer was especially productive, with over 840 students participating from several school districts and employing more than 100 college and high school interns. Washington Unified Superintendent Dr. Cheryl P. Hildreth praised the partnership with RFDC, highlighting the enriching, culturally responsive activities that promote literacy and community engagement. Craig DeLuz, Board President of Robla School District, shared personal testament of Freedom Schools enhancing student enthusiasm for learning. As the event drew to a close, students proudly displayed signs while marching across campus.
