A mother of a Black student at a Chicago public magnet school has initiated legal action against the city’s board of education. She claims that her daughter experienced sexual, physical, verbal, and racial abuse from both peers and educators over three years, beginning in fifth grade. Sher’Ron Hinton, a single mother of 31, felt a sense of accomplishment when her daughter and four other children secured spots at the esteemed Wildwood IB World Magnet School in 2022. Identified in court as "Jenny Doe," her daughter was the only Black student in her class, one of merely 4% of the school's 517 students. Hinton's lawsuit details a culture of bullying against Jenny that persisted throughout her enrollment. Teachers allegedly failed to intervene as students delivered constant harassment, including derogatory slurs and exclusion. Despite reporting incidents, the school's administration did not take adequate measures, and communications concerning Jenny's mental health were not disclosed to Hinton, leading to a cascade of tragic consequences for her daughter.
