Black Health News: Clinical Trial Looking To Support Black Families for Dementia Care

For Black families grappling with the complexities of dementia, an innovative program is emerging to offer invaluable support and redefine the caregiving experience. The SHARE for Dementia initiative, spearheaded by the Cleveland-based Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging, is actively recruiting Black Americans for a pivotal clinical trial. This concentrated effort addresses persistent disparities in healthcare research, ensuring that future dementia therapies are both inclusive and effective.Dementia significantly affects Black communities, where higher occurrences of Alzheimer's disease and related conditions prevail. Historically, Black Americans have been underrepresented in clinical studies, leading to knowledge gaps in appropriate treatments. This trial aims to close that gap with an evidence-driven care-planning program that empowers families and individuals in the early stages of dementia.The SHARE initiative—signifying Support, Health, Activities, Resources, and Education—promotes proactive dialogues about care values and healthy pursuits. A key feature is a free iPad app that streamlines family communication and care coordination. The program is delivered by trained SHARE Counselors, enhancing family involvement and improving access to necessary services.
