Boston is paying tribute to New Edition by declaring Saturday, August 30, as “New Edition Day.”
As reported by NBC Boston, this iconic R&B group is set to have a street named in their honor in their former Roxbury neighborhood, accompanied by a vibrant block party celebrating the renaming ceremony on Dearborn Street, near the Orchard Gardens Boys & Girls Club.
The festivities kicked off around 10 a.m. and featured a backpack giveaway, gaming truck, photo booth, and food trucks. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu officially proclaimed the day as “New Edition Day.”
The celebrated members—Ronnie DeVoe, Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant—originated from Roxbury in 1978, gaining fame with hits such as “Mr. Telephone Man” and “Candy Girl.”
In a heartfelt moment, Ricky presented a $25,000 check to the Orchard Gardens Resident Association and another check of the same amount to the Boston Arts Academy Foundation.
