Three Universities Announce the Appointments of Black Scholars to Dean Positions

Stephanie Shonekan was named dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland College Park, effective July 1. She has been serving as senior associate dean of the College of Arts and Science at the University of Missouri. Dr. Shonekan is the co-editor of several books including Black Resistance in the Americas (Routledge, 2018) and Black Lives Matter and Music: Protest, Intervention, Reflection (Indiana University Press, 2018). Dr. Shonekan holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Jos in Nigeria. She earned a master’s degree in English from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria and a Ph.D. in folklore and ethnomusicology from Indiana University, Bloomington. Bimbola Akintade was named dean of the College of Nursing at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. He will take office on July 1. Dr. Akintade has been serving as an associate professor in the organizational systems and adult health department and has served since 2020 as the associate dean of the master’s degree program in nursing at the University of Maryland.
