Michigan Boy Faces Unjust Expulsion After Heroically Disarming Classmate

A mother from Michigan is voicing her concerns after her 11-year-old son disarmed a classmate wielding a firearm on school property, yet faced expulsion for not promptly notifying authorities. Savitra McClurkin's son, Sakir, a seventh grader at Lansing's Dwight Rich School of the Arts, was expelled following this incident at the conclusion of the 2025 spring semester.On May 22, an unloaded and disassembled firearm was discovered at the school, prompting an alert from officials. Following an investigation, a 12-year-old was arrested. McClurkin stated Sakir recognized the danger, disarmed the weapon, and disposed of the bullets due to his hunting knowledge. Despite her pride in his actions, school administrators deemed his failure to inform staff a violation warranting a one-year expulsion.Struggling with this outcome, McClurkin has voiced her frustrations at local board meetings and initiated a GoFundMe campaign for Sakir's homeschooling, highlighting the financial challenges they now face. As of Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser has raised nearly $25,000.
