TSU’s Collins Departs for NBA Coaching Opportunity

NASHVILLE, TN — Head men's basketball coach of Tennessee State University, Brian “Penny” Collins, has resigned immediately to take on a coaching role in the NBA. During this transition period, assistant coach Erik Buggs will assume the position of interim head coach.Collins’ exit concludes a noteworthy seven-year period during which he revitalized TSU men’s basketball, restoring its legacy of excellence. His leadership propelled the Tigers to a semifinal finish in last season’s Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, concluding with a 17-16 overall record.Dr. Mikki Allen, Director of Athletics, expressed best wishes for Collins and his family, highlighting the significance of this new opportunity, which showcases his impactful contributions over the years. He established a familial culture and a competitive program that garnered respect throughout the conference and the wider basketball sphere.Buggs, who joined TSU last season after a successful stint at UT Martin, will continue to build on Collins' foundation.
