Will County Board member Denise Winfrey (D-Joliet) recalled being at the late Larry Walsh Sr.’s home about 14 or 15 years ago when he came up with an idea for a bridge that would direct truck traffic off of local roads and directly from Interstate 80 to the Intermodals. “It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally here,” Winfrey told The times Weekly on Tuesday. “What started as an idea with Larry Walsh Sr. is now becoming a reality. He was a visionary.” Winfrey along with other county, state, and local officials and others involved in the Houbolt Road Extension attended a groundbreaking ceremony held Tuesday for the extension. Winfrey said it was exciting to see all the different parties come together to make it happen and she credited the City of Joliet for getting the ball rolling on the project. The Houbolt Road Extension project, projected to cost about $200 million, is being privately financed and involves designing and constructing a new 1.5-mile-long highway extension, including a quarter of a mile-long bridge over the Des Plaines River.
