A white police officer in Akron is facing another civil lawsuit alleging excessive force after he allegedly punched a Black man during a traffic stop, resulting in a broken nose. The federal lawsuit, lodged against Officer Warren Spragg and the city on June 27, claims illegal use of excessive force, assault and battery, and false arrest. The case involves Terrell Battles, a passenger in his brother’s car, which was stopped for an expired tag.Battles complied with requests for identification but resisted exiting the vehicle. Bodycam footage reportedly shows Spragg opening the door, forcibly dragging Battles out, and subsequently striking him multiple times as he lay on the ground. The third punch broke Battles' nose, with blood seen in police footage.Earlier, Spragg was involved in another lawsuit after an assault on Jordan Ely, which the city settled for $15,000. The current lawsuit claims a pattern of excessive force by Spragg and implicates systemic failures within the Akron Police Department.
