(TriceEdneyWire.com)—It didn’t take long for Pope Francis to get under Donald Trump’s skin. During his flight back to Rome after a visit to Mexico, the pope said during an interview: “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not bridges, is not Christian.” Trump, who at the time, was the 2016 Republican presidential frontrunner, responded by saying, “For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful.” Trump then accused the Mexican government of “using the pope as a pawn.” In a press release, Trump suggested that the leader of the Catholic Church would regret not supporting his candidacy. Pope Francis’ comments generated mixed responses from both ardent Trump supporters and undecided Republicans. Some strongly believed the pope needed to stay out of the political arena and stick to religion. Others, like me, saw Pope Francis as the moral compass by speaking truth to power rather than serving as a political kingmaker for Republicans. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, one of Trump’s opponents for the party’s nomination, was one of many who were confused by the true meaning behind the pope’s words.
