Emory University’s Jericho Brown Appointed Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets

Jericho Brown, the Emory University Charles Howard Candler Professor of English and Creative Writing, has been named to the Board of Chancellors of the Academy of American Poets. Chancellors serve six-year terms, acting as artistic advisors and poetry ambassadors in the world as well as judging the academy’s largest legacy prizes for American poets. In 2020, Professor Brown won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his poetry collection, The Tradition (Copper Canyon Press, 2019). In 2015, he won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award in the poetry category for his collection The New Testament (Copper Canyon Press, 2015). His debut poetry collection, Please (New Issues, 2008), won the 2009 American Book Award. Dr. Brown joined the faculty at Emory University in 2012. He has served as director of the unitersity’s nationally renowned creative writing program and teaches both first-year seminars and upper-level workshops. A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Dr. Brown is a magna cum laude graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans. He holds a master of fine arts degree in creative writing from the University of New Orleans and a Ph.D. in literature and creative writing from the University of Houston.
