In Memoriam: John Louis Flateau, 1950-2023

John Louis Flateau, a long-time faculty member at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, died at his home in Brooklyn on December 30. He was 73 years old. “We are heartbroken to learn of Dr. Flateau’s passing and send our deepest love and sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues. and former students,” said Patricia Ramsey, president of Medgar Evers College. “His impact on not just the Medgar Evers College community, but the greater Brooklyn and New York communities, is profound and unparalleled.” Dr. Flateau served as a professor and chair of the department of public administration at Medgar Evers College. He was also the director of the Dubois Bunche Center for Public Policy. He was also the former dean of the college’s School of Business. Before joining the faculty at the college, Dr. Flateau was chief of staff for New York City Mayor David Dinkins. Professor Flateau was the author of several books including Black Brooklyn: The Politics of Ethnicity, Class, and Gender (2016) and The Prison Industrial Complex: Race, Crime & Justice in New York (2002).
