During the Great Depression, FDR established all kinds of programs that allowed Blacks to get out of the hot sun picking cotton and get on the public dole. My grandfather said it was a choice between working 10 hours in the hot sun picking cotton for $40 a month or getting on the government dole and getting $50. Not much of a choice, even for the people willing to “pull themselves up by the boot straps”. Nate Cohn of the New York Times referenced FDR’s New Deal coalition as an example of a genuine realignment. Again, Black voters overwhelmingly supported the Republican Party from the time of Abraham Lincoln until the 1930s. However the GOP ignored their plea for financial help.
