Tuskegee University Flight School Receives $6.7 Million in Federal Funding

United States Senator Katie Britt has announced a $6.7 million investment to launch an aviation program at historically Black Tuskegee University in Alabama. Currently undergoing accreditation approval from the Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges, the Tuskegee Aviation Program aims to introduce the field of aviation to a new generation. The federal funds will allow the program to officially launch this fall once the review is complete. Students who enroll in the new bachelor’s degree in aviation science will study general education and aviation science courses that focus on aerodynamics, aircraft structures, aircraft propulsion, performance stability, and meteorology. They will also receive flight training, ultimately taking the official certification needed to serve as a commercial and private pilot once they have completed their required number of flight hours. The first cohort of the aviation science degree program will consist of about 25 students. As the program expands, the university expects to the program’s enrollment to expand to more than 200 students.
