WeGo Public Transit drew a crowd as it commemorated Transit Equity Day at Fisk University’s John Hope and Aurelia Elizabeth Franklin Library. State Representative Harold Love, Jr. was the keynote speaker, joined by Dr. Robert Z. Carr, Jr., Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Fisk University, Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell, WeGo CEO Steve Bland, and Nashville MTA Board Chair Gail Carr Williams. The day marks the birthday of Rosa Parks. Remarks reflected upon the sacrifices made by transit heroes so that everyone can enjoy equitable and accessible transit. “We come today to celebrate one who made it possible for all of us to tear down the walls that keep us apart,” State Representative Harold Love, Jr. said. “As we see our city grow, we believe in hope that members of our community won’t be left behind and that’s what transit equity is all about.” The speakers joined Metro Council Members on a bus ride from the Elizabeth Duff Transit Center at WeGo Central to Fisk. Transit Equity Day is a national day-of-action to commemorate Rosa Parks and other civil rights icons and to advocate for accessible, reliable, and affordable transit.
