Inspect your refrigerator, because if you’re like many, a delectable pasta meal is a favorite. Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) raised an alarm regarding ready-to-eat pasta dishes contaminated with Listeria, which has proved fatal. Since June, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has actively investigated this alarming outbreak. Various national retailers, such as Walmart and Trader Joe’s, have sold the affected pasta products, specifically certain lots from Nate’s Fine Foods, which are now being recalled. This recall followed laboratory tests revealing possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination—known to cause severe health issues. Testing identified a match with strains linked to a previous outbreak that led to four deaths and numerous illnesses. Barbara Kowalcyk from George Washington University noted that while pasta is not typically associated with Listeria, cooked meals may pose risks. FreshRealm, another company, has confirmed connections to the outbreak, while emphasizing a separate issue regarding spinach contamination.
