A Quartet of African Americans Who Are Taking on New Administrative Duties in Higher Education

Carlotta Mitchell was appointed director of its Center for Academic Advising at Florida A&M University. In her new role, Mitchell will oversee more than 30 academic advisors located within the university’s 14 colleges and schools. She has been on the university’s staff for 25 years. Mitchell holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in applied social science from Florida A&M University. She holds a master’s degree in conflict analysis and resolution, from Nova Southeastern University. David Harris is the new director of athletics and the Ben Weiner Director of Athletics Chair at Tulane University in New Orleans. Harris, who was named an Athletics Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2021, has been serving as director of athletics at the University of Northern Iowa. Prior to taking over at the University of Northern Iowa in 2016, Harris served as senior associate athletic director at Iowa State University. Harris, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and an MBA from the University of Mississippi.
