Parents Applaud After A State Decides To Fully Cover Child Care Costs

Effective November 1, parents in New Mexico with children under 13 can finally breathe a sigh of relief regarding childcare expenses. The state has pioneered an extraordinary initiative, becoming the first in the nation to offer no-cost universal childcare, irrespective of family income. This innovative program is projected to save families an average of $12,000 annually for each child. This initiative is particularly significant in a nation grappling with skyrocketing childcare costs, which often hinder financial stability for many, especially Black and working-class families.A staggering 79% of families reported struggling to find affordable childcare, which directly impacts job retention. New Mexico has transformed its childcare landscape since 2019 and eliminated all income restrictions this year. The state aims to create 5,000 new childcare providers and establish a loan fund for facility expansion. Echoing this focus, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham emphasized that investing in universal childcare is crucial for family stability and economic prosperity.
