ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Advocates are pushing for a Georgia Reparations bill to move forward at the State Capitol. House Bill 955 would create the Georgia Equity and Fairness Commission and would allow that commission to look at the impact of Georgia’s slavery on the descendants of slaves and then find the appropriate remedies for those descendants. The bill’s sponsor is State Rep. Roger Bruce. Supporting the bill is ReparationsPush, an organization that is fighting so that injustices of past actions towards Black Georgians are repaid. Anqous Cosby with ReparationsPush said they are collaborating with state lawmakers and other advocates to make sure the bill moves forward. “This is the civil rights capital. Georgia is,” Cosby said. “So whatever happens in Georgia, happens all around the nation. We have Dr. King’s legacy, Malcom X’s family legacy, we have Elijah Muhammad’s legacy.” The group is having a call to action press conference on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Georgia State Capitol.
