Alfred Wins Again At CANOC Awards

Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred was recognised on Saturday night in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands, winning two titles at the inaugural CANOC Sports Awards. Alfred was named the Caribbean Female Sports Personality of the Year, ahead of some of the region’s brightest talents.  World Indoors 60m champion, Olympic 100m champion, and Wanda Diamond League 100m champion Alfred of Saint Lucia is the top-ranked female athlete from the Caribbean at the moment, and was the only nominee with three titles in 2024. The other finalists were Olympic 400m champion Marileidy Paulino (Dominican Republic) and former 100m hurdles Olympic gold medallist Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (Puerto Rico). Five-time Cuban Olympic wrestling champion Mijain Lopez Nunez won Caribbean Male Sports Personality of the Year over Lindon Victor (Grenada, Decathlon) and Roje Stona (Jamaica, Athletics). Earlier in the evening, the 23-year-old Alfred shared the Breakthrough Award with Thea LaFond (Commonwealth of Dominica). This award honoured athletes who earned their first medals in continental or international multi-sport competition. Triple jumper Lafond also won World Indoors and Olympic gold.
