As we navigate an era defined by digital reliance, a Birmingham-based innovator is urging families, students, and educators to take a moment for introspection and renewal. Courtney Woods, the visionary behind PC Empowerment and PC Media Techs, has introduced Back to School Digital Detox Week, a mental wellness initiative aimed at equipping communities to adapt to Alabama’s new FOCUS Act, which limits phone usage in classrooms. “After a decade in web design, I noticed mental fatigue stemming from information overload,” Woods noted. The detox week features themed days encouraging participants to delete unneeded apps and mute disruptive notifications, as these can induce anxiety. Live broadcasts on V94.9 radio, available until August 4, will share daily themes and resources. With educational legislation changing, the initiative is well-timed. “This is the first year phones are legally banned in schools,” Woods emphasized. With support from V94.9's Lady Woo, the campaign aspires to foster healthier digital habits and increased self-awareness among students and families.
