Banana, Plantain Farmers To Get $1 Million In Assistance

Banana and plantain farmers who had their production disrupted by the unavailability of boxes will receive approximately $1 million in assistance from the government this week. Agriculture Minister Alfred Prospere disclosed that on Friday, the government will present cheques to 244 farmers who experienced a lack of income due to the unavailability of boxes from mid-March to early April this year. “All those cheques are ready,” Prospere told reporters. “So I am appealing to all farmers who were affected as a result of the boxes to make themselves available at the IRDC in La Caye on Friday afternoon at 2 pm to begin receiving their cheques in the form of that small assistance we are giving to them to help them recover from their loss,” the Minister stated. He urged the farmers to have some form of identification to assist with documentation and signing for the cheques. Prospere described the financial assistance to the farmers who qualify as a wonderful gesture by the Philip J. Pierre administration, in keeping with its policy of putting the people first.
