Bertis English Is the New Editor of Journal of African American History

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History has chosen Bertis D. English, professor of history at Alabama State University, as the new editor for the Journal of African American History. The Journal of African American History, formerly the Journal of Negro History, was established by Carter G. Woodson in 1916 and is an official publication of ASALH. The journal publishes original scholarly articles and book reviews on the African American experience. Dr. English is a tenured history professor, former undergraduate history program coordinator, associate dean, and acting dean of the Alabama State University College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. He author of Civil Wars, Civil Beings, and Civil Rights in Alabama’s Black-Belt: A History of Perry County (University of Alabama Press, 2020). The book centers on bi-ethic excellence in the city of Marion, as well as in Perry County, and charts the early development of The Lincoln School, The Lincoln Normal School, and ultimately the institution that is known today as Alabama State University.
