The City of Birmingham, collaborating with local artists, cultural leaders, and community stakeholders, is set to inaugurate the Smithfield Public Art Walk—a dynamic, walkable outdoor gallery reflecting the neighborhood's history, present, and future on Saturday, July 26. This initiative spans vital corridors in Smithfield, showcasing large-scale murals, storytelling installations, sidewalk poetry, and augmented reality experiences that engage visitors with the essence of this historic community. Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event is free to all. “Smithfield has always been a canvas of courage," expressed Mayor Randall L. Woodfin. This endeavor results from a partnership between the Departments of Community Development and Innovation and Economic Opportunity, Create Birmingham, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and committed neighborhood stakeholders. “We aim to weave together creative placemaking, community involvement, and public art,” noted Erica Chisolm, Senior Urban Designer and renowned muralist. Key attractions include murals celebrating themes of legacy, community-led storytelling embracing diverse voices, creatively painted pathways, and engaging programming that aligns with the art's unveiling.
