On January 1, a groundbreaking event unfolded in local governance as three Black women officially assumed their roles as mayors in major cities, reported Shine My Crown.In Detroit, Mary Sheffield, aged 38, took her oath in a private ceremony at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. This moment marks her as the city's inaugural female and Black mayor throughout its 324-year history. Sheffield, the daughter of civil rights leader Horace Sheffield III, made her political debut on the Detroit City Council in 2014 at merely 26, becoming its youngest member. She triumphantly won the 2025 mayoral election, succeeding longtime Mayor Mike Duggan.Syracuse welcomed Sharon Owens, 62, as its new mayor in a private ceremony held December 31. Owens holds the distinction of being the first Black woman to lead the city in its 177-year chronology.Meanwhile, in Albany, Dorcey Applyrs, 44, was sworn in, marking the first Black woman and person of color in this office.
