Every two seconds, a blood transfusion is required in the U.S. Jamilah Bourdon’s need arose dramatically on a snowy February morning in 2021. Near her New Jersey workplace, she faced a daunting challenge: crossing a bridge buried under four feet of snow via her bicycle. Unfortunately, an 18-wheeler collided with her, leading to a near-fatal incident that necessitated five transfusions and 13 surgeries. “I was saved by blood transfusions. Feeling that bag of blood flow into my veins was surreal,” Bourdon recalls. Her arduous recovery, complicated by COVID-19 restrictions, found solace in music, particularly Metallica's “One.” It resonated deeply, eloquently encapsulating her plight as isolated and suffering. Years later, she returned the favor by donating blood at a Metallica-hosted drive, emphasizing the power of giving back. As Blood Donor Day approaches on June 14, Bourdon calls for collective action: “Your contribution could be life-changing." The urgent need for blood donations remains critical amidst increasing challenges in healthcare access.
