When it comes to breast cancer, Black women have some staggering facts to face. While studies show that the overall mortality rate for this form of cancer has fallen in the past couple of decades, it has only risen for Black American women. They continue to have higher rates of breast cancer than other ethnicities, usually have the disease at a younger age, and are also more likely to develop the most aggressive form of the disease known as triple-negative breast cancer. To make matters worse, many Black women aren’t diagnosed quickly despite having symptoms of the condition. If this happens with triple-negative breast cancer, your odds of survival can plummet as it needs to be treated quickly if you have any hope of beating it. In this video, Dr. Ogori N. Kalu discusses a few reasons why a mammogram might not be enough to get you the breast cancer diagnosis you need.
