Recent incidents, such as school shootings in Minneapolis and Denver, Charlie Kirk's murder, and the ongoing genocide in Gaza and Russia's conflict in Ukraine, paint a grim picture of violence's prevalence. This widespread turmoil is indeed unsettling and tragic.Yet, does anyone truly endorse violence?Culturally, our society conveys many conflicting signals about violence. We often celebrate it in films and gaming, spend vast sums on weapons while simultaneously investing in policing efforts intended to curb it. We tend to justify violence under certain circumstances yet passionately decry it when it involves the “other side." We criminalize violence while also profiting from it, reflecting a deep societal trauma. This week, however, many individuals are uniting to combat all forms of violence. Campaign Nonviolence Action Days is currently underway, encouraging initiatives promoting a culture of peace and nonviolence, free from war, poverty, and racism.
