Although the year concluded with a disappointing outcome, it paved the way for the draft. The Kings secured the 13th pick and chose 22-year-old Devin Carter from Providence. He is the son of retired NBA player Anthony Carter. In the rookie’s first interview with Sacramento media, Carter explained what type of player the Kings drafted. “Sacramento is getting a ‘win now’ player,” Carter said confidently. “A mature guy who carries himself well on and off the court. I’m somebody who does all the dirty work. I’ll get rebounds, dive on the floor for loose balls, take charges, guard the other team’s best player, whatever it takes to win.” Carter’s understanding of what winning plays are is something that attracted the Kings to him. But in college, he proved he was more than just a scrappy player. In Carter’s junior season, he displayed his ability to score efficiently by averaging 19.7 points while shooting 47%.
