As Bethel AME Church in Baltimore gears up for the momentous 209th Baltimore Annual Conference, it simultaneously celebrates its own 240th anniversary, reflecting its enduring dedication to faith, justice, and community upliftment. Notably, a longstanding friendly rivalry exists regarding which Bethel holds the title of “first.” Founded in 1794, Philadelphia's Mother Bethel officially claims this title, while Bethel Baltimore predated it through the African Methodist Society in 1785. Despite initial independence, Bethel Baltimore eventually joined AME, evolving into a significant advocate for freedom and reform throughout history.
