The City of Birmingham, in collaboration with regional partners, has unveiled the initial Central Alabama Climate Action Plan (CACAP), a pioneering initiative aimed at mitigating climate pollution throughout Alabama. This detailed 291-page report is backed by an impressive $1 million Climate Pollution Reduction Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Although Birmingham oversees the plan, it has resulted from thorough cooperation among local governments, organizations, and Central Alabama residents. The CACAP presents a methodical framework to lower emissions across vital sectors such as transportation, energy, waste, and industry, while fostering health, resilience, and economic vitality. It features 18 measures, 68 strategies, and 139 targeted actions specifically designed for urban, suburban, and rural settings. Existing initiatives in Birmingham, including fleet electrification and LED streetlight upgrades, illustrate the proactive steps already underway.Community members are encouraged to examine and provide feedback on the draft until October 22 at CentralAlabamaClimate.com, with public presentations scheduled for the preceding Wednesday before its official submission to the EPA on December 1.
