On December 9, the Sacramento City Council ratified four efficient contracts aimed at assisting transitional aged youth (TAY) confronting homelessness. These contracts, amounting to $1.3 million, are designated for Waking the Village’s Village Youth Shelter Program, Wind Youth Services’ Common Ground Shelter Program, Sacramento LGBT Community Center’s Short-Term Transitional Emergency Program, and the LGBT Center’s Transitional Living Program. Funding derives from the State of California’s Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP) grants, covering expenses through September 30, 2026. Brian Pedro, director of the Department of Community Response, emphasized the essential role of TAY shelters in the City’s homelessness strategy, highlighting the compassionate yet fiscally responsible support extended to vulnerable populations. Notably, current state funding has diminished by 40%, prompting DCR to prioritize shelter capacity sustainability by reducing nightly operational costs. Additionally, the Council approved new contracts for the Outreach and Engagement Center and street outreach workers, ensuring continued support for families and individuals experiencing homelessness in the region.
